Pinkboard: Party Graffiti Wall 59

I am regularly challenged about the editorial policy of Pinkboard. And I regularly need to explain what Pinkboard is and why I need to have an editorial policy. So here we go again ...

Pinkboard is owned and operated by myself (Panther). I created Pinkboard in 1986 (before some of you attended your first birthday party and before many of you started clubbing). Since then I have invested thousands and thousands of dollars into operating and maintaining Pinkboard. Each year I pour lots of money into Pinkboard to keep it running (it is not my full time job). I also spend many hours maintaining and enhancing it. I feel therefore that I have some right to dictate the editorial policy.

Pinkboard is not a public forum. It is a forum that allows anonymous comment by unregistered persons, subject to moderation. "Pinkboard reserves the right, at any time, to edit or delete any contributions ..." (Read the small print!)

Posting on Pinkboard is not a right, it is a privilege.

Thirteen years ago, when the first graffiti wall started, most people on the net knew each other. As the net became more popular the variety of people grew. Bitchiness turned into flames and then into venom. So Pinkboard, and virtually every other discussion forum on the net, introduced moderation. Today you find very few sites that are not moderated. Pinkboard has so far managed without mandatory registration for the graffiti walls.

Pinkboard is often accused of "censorship", that is: the act of withholding information from the public. I sometimes choose to not allow posts, but Pinkboard is not preventing anyone from having their information released elsewhere. (Get a blog and you can publish it yourself.) You might also want to read the moderation policy.

Parties are supposed to be about enjoyment. This wall is intended to be about anticipating and sharing that enjoyment. Unfortunately this wall sees a lot of agro: people who believe that their point of view is the only one; people who rubbish anything that is not to their liking; people who continually put down others. These people drive away those who just want to enjoy themselves. Because Pinkboard is anonymous even I can't tell who or how many people do this, but I suspect it is just a few.

Some things have to be said, and I let them be said. But once everything has been said anything further is, I am sure, counter-productive. I (regularly) ask you to put yourself in the other person's place and try to imagine how they would feel. Continued criticism and negative feedback is demoralising. I am surprised some people in our community continue to make such an effort when they are shown so little appreciation. I frequently wonder why I do.

So here we go again ... I ask you to respect the other posters and their views. I ask you to be generous with your praise and constructive with your criticism. I ask you to celebrate that we have such venues and parties where we can be ourselves without fear. I ask you to put the fun back into Pinkboard.

[d'LUX] @ Midnightshift Club, Saturday 17th May
<

Guest Djs; William Silva[Sao Paulo,Brazil, tribal house]
Chip[Sydney,Australia,'tribal with an edge']

I have worked as a bartender for a few years now and I have always had this idea of putting a party together that would reflect what a brazilian party is all about, I'm talking about the vibe, the production, the twisted ideas and a party to remember, as we say in Brazil every opportunity to party is an excuse to throw yourself out there and be open to embrace an experience that can build into an absolut unforgettable memory piece.

When I say Brazil do keep in mind we are not thinking women in their bikinis and feathers, we talking about great beats, hot bodies in our famous speedos and drag shows that goes beyond the usual and expected.

You will see what we talking about as you walk through the door.

Our guest Dj William will be throwing the hot upbeat tribal sound and we will also welcome Dj Chip, who has thrown more hands in the air than that at a full Aussie Stadium.

Minnie Cooper has prepared an incredible show for the night and we will also feature 2 more twisted shows, Kitty Glitter and Decoda Secret will also be bringing their style to our d'Lux stage.

Our Brazilian go go dancers are also ready to bring their brazilian style to our great night .

We will also feature a great lighting laser show that will uplift our dance floor to a higher level to match our music.

We are all ready to welcome you and your friends to our special event. We hope to see you under our mirror balls this upcoming Saturday the 17th.

xx Daniel

PS. We will see you at the upstairs room at The Midnight Shift which has kindly supported our first d'LUX event.

Manacle
The inner west will get a new gay bar on May 30 – this one in Petersham.

Manacle owners Andrew Clarke and Stuart Fraser this week confirmed the widely circulating rumour they had bought the Clarence Hotel on the corner of Parramatta Rd and Crystal St and would be opening for business on the last day of the month.

The popular Manacle club, previously located under the Taylor Square Hotel, will form part of the new venue.

“If you’d asked us two years ago if we would ever move away from Oxford St, we would have said no,” Clarke said. “But it’s become too violent now.”

The pair, who have been without a venue since Manacle shut its doors late last year, said they were confident the new location would attract not only patrons of the previous club, but a whole new host of people who no longer want to go out on Oxford St.

“In the last five weeks we were at Taylor Square we did a postcode survey and found that about 75 percent of our customers lived in the inner west, so we’re moving into their neighbourhood rather than having them come to ours,” Fraser said.

“It may mean that we lose some of our clientele who happen to live in Randwick or Bondi, but we are still only a cab ride away.”

Clarke and Fraser believe the purchase of the Clarence Hotel will make it the first gay-owned freehold venue in Sydney for a number of years.

However, the couple said patrons can expect more from the hotel than just the well-known Manacle brand. As well as the club, there will be a gaming room, public bar, TAB facilities, bistro and, in the future, the possibility of gay and lesbian accommodation.

The Manacle everyone knows and loves will form a key part of the overall venue and will maintain the same flavour as the previous venue, as well as the discreet entrance.

“This has to look exactly like Manacle at Taylor Square, otherwise our patrons are going to feel cheated,” Fraser said.

That includes the 300-plus pieces of framed memorabilia now sitting in storage at Rosebery, the infamous Manacle chain spiderweb, the cage, and the expected return of the strip’s best-known bouncer, Viv, who has been offered a return to the new premises.

Hordern hard rock on nose
A little excerpt below from an article in the SMH today. It's a little known secret that this years Mardi Gras Party was almost cancelled as the Hordern was flooded with sewarage just a couple of days before. While we were dancing away a few hundred truckloads of sewerage was being pumped out so that we could enjoy our night...

* * * * * *

WHEN the toilets began erupting in the Hordern Pavilion in the days before this year's Mardi Gras party, management did what most home owners do: call the plumber.

An electric eel will usually fix a blocked sewer, but this was no ordinary blockage.

The prospect of choked toilets at an all-night dance party that pulls 18,000 in a quiet year had the management reeling at the thought of glitter queens needing gumboots to get to the bathrooms. Sydney Water sent engineers to investigate.

At first they were stumped; the huge sewer main under the building normally has plenty of capacity because it has to carry waste from the nearby Sydney Cricket Ground and the Sydney Football Stadium, as well as the Fox Studio precinct and many of Paddington's finer homes.

The engineers sent a tiny camera up the pipe, and could not believe what they saw: the sewer was jammed with concrete, apart from a small gap at the top of the pipe.

Cameras revealed the blockages ran for 140 metres in two sections. The first 80 metres ran right under the Hordern Pavilion. Another 60-metre section ran under the Royal Hall of Industries.

"The mother of all blockages," was how Sydney Water's spokesman Brendan Elliott described it.

With the prospect of sewage swamping the gay crowd's most glittering event, Sydney Water had no option but to install two bypass pipes, each 200 metres long, to stop the waste of thousands of sports fans turning the Hordern's toilets into fountains.

The Clarence (incorporating Manacle) - new at Petersham
I would love to see the new Clarence become similar to the extremely popular Peel Hotel in Melbourne, which I visited last month. First of all, the Peel keep out the straights by having shots of naked guys (incl thier bits) on all the plasma screens thoughout the place, and the music is a mix of more popular recognisable commercial music (top 40 etc). Would be great to see male strip shows make a comeback in NSW too, makes a change from Drag all the time.
Can't wait for it to open!! And so close, just down from Petersham station.

Re:
In the full page add on page 29 of SX yesterday about the opening of The Clarence (incorporating Manacle) i read this line with a hint of curiosity.....

The Clarence has a 24hr licence, a capacity around 350 and there are several sections...

* An OUTbar - The public bar catering to the GLBT community and their friends

* A bottle shop thru till 1am

* Wall Street - You can guess what this room is, it's just not mentioned in NSW

and so on and so on ............

OK , Am I right in guessing that they are so bold to be providing a back room ? And if so, how are they getting around the NSW laws regarding this issue ?

Very curious.

Re:
Music is important too- the crowds that go to Palms (is always packed), and formerly the Imperial, would go to Clarence if they played similar music, (in the bar section).
The Peel in Melb does this so well- they have the popular music in the bar area, and the trace/tribal etc in the back dance club (which in this case will be the Manacle section). Plus the Peel has a type of "back room" where "things happen", which is up a staircase, with to an area with glass windows covered with prison bars, that actually overlooks the dance club area.
Now if we can just get our own version of the fabulously professional & diverse JoyFM glbt community radio station as well that Melb has, we'd be in gay heaven.

Best to get ideas to them NOW, prior to them opening, to start off on the right foot. I think having some retro/popular music in the front "OutBar" is a great idea, and is certainly successful for The Peel in Melbourne.

the slow demise of pinkboard ??
Heres an interesting observation I've recently made regarding the last few pinkboard graffiti walls , It makes for an interesting discussion, please keep your comments constructive please

Wall 55 - Average # posts per day = 14.60

Wall 56 - Average # posts per day = 13.52

Wall 57 - Average # posts per day = 9.54

Wall 58 - Average # posts per day = 9.21

Wall 59 - Average # posts per day = 4.50

It is my opinion that the over regulation of this forum seems to be driving people away. And is the introduction message to wall 59 sending a clear "you are not welcome" message to pinkboard regulars who want to discuss tough and meaningful topics. I'd suggest it is, because the above statistics certainly don't lie.

Anyone wanna discuss this and boost poor old wall #59's sagging average ??

It needed done because some people were just nasty or saying things that could cause law suits to happen.

The usual homophobes posted who dont know how to use the remote to change channels but the next day the whole thread was completely removed. Re:
"I thought it was just because we are going into winter and people are partying less. The demise of the Hand-in-Hand parties and less new & interesting parties at this time of year would cause a normal slow down in posts."

it's got NOTHING to do with a slow partying season and it being winter. Here's the proof from the similar periods in 2006 and 2007 -

Wall 46 - (period 26/4/06 to 5/6/06) Average # posts per day = 18.26

Wall 53 - (period 10/5/07 to 17/6/07) Average # posts per day = 10.50

I think the winter season contributes a little to the falling stats but you simply cant ignore a drop off like 18.26 posts per day at this time in 2006 , to 10.50 posts per day at this time in 2007 compared to this current wall's 4.50 posts per day.

Indeed, the stats don't lie.

So the question remains, How can pinkboard come back from a situation where a great deal of its fans have stop contributing and walked away ? I personally cant see it recovering. People eventually get sick of trying to make useful contributions never to have their thoughts published. Maybe registered signatures being unmoderated is the way to go ?

Suggestions people ?

I have been following a thread on Yahoo about Gay rights and there are a number of posts that have been deleted for libelous and/or discrimination.

Some posters on here named people and I dont think that
is fair and also gives the person an excuse to sue if they can.

Also I dont like personal attacks. Especially DJ's. You get a dozen nasty posts naming a DJ but its usually balanced by others saying how they loved the party. Some just cannot seem to accept that there are different tastes and more so they have total disregard to a persons
feelings.

Like anything in todays world there are many sites now offering similar things to Pinkboard but I like Pinkboard as its local , it offers Forums, Personals, Job
ads etc all in the one site. Sure your Facebooks and whatevers have forums for party people etc etc and that would be great if travelling overseas and you can read up on them etc but Pinkboard is truly in Australia and is aimed at our community only.

its about variety.

Lots of things change -

Big dance parties 20 years ago were the gay ones and just about the only ones. Now it has diversified into many types.

20 years ago you wanted to see a new movie just as it was released it was George St cinemas now one has gone, 2 have merged and many cinemas have opened around the suburbs.

20 years ago Oxford St was about it for gay bars but not any more.

Years ago it was Pinkboard servicing the community but now there is competition but *personally* I dont think the others offer as broad a choice as you get on Pinkboard.
I've used it for personals, the forums, the occassional massage.
Will always be competition - Replies: add

This often means that if the post is 'published' at all, it's now amongst the collapsed posts and not displayed, or if it is displayed, is no longer in context as discussion has moved on by 12 or more hours.

'Panther' is quite within his rights to operate his own little prescence on the net in anyway he wants. But if people find a more evenhanded way of having their views presented, then obviously they'll move on.

This is all the opinion of the poster, and Pinkboard is welcome to refute any claims of posts from certain IP ranges being held over for further moderation.

Most of us don't contribute financially to the running of this website, but we do take advantage of the service it provides to us.

I've had so much enjoyment from the Party Graffiti Walls here, in getting a real sense of community and friendship. Sure, some of us get a little out of control at times, but we should be thanking Panther for all his time in managing this site and the Graffiti Walls.

Personally, I have been away for a couple of months, so haven't been contributing to the Walls. I can't speak for anyone else.

It was packed out, music was good and the venue is a really refreshing change from the same old on oxford street. Bar service needs a bit of an upgrade, of sorts - it took awhile to get a drink. Otherwise, well done guys, good initiative.

Clarence Manacle
we arrived at 12 midnight, it was really packed out in the left bar and in the right dark bar. So proud to be part of leather man in sydney, so much appreciated with all your support, boys. However the place need more upgrade and carefully touch up to brings up the feel of leather pub. All my friends included me last night were dissapointed because : the bar men were not experienced enough, slow movement, not enough staff behind the bar to serve customers, took very long time for us to get the drinks. In the right dark bar, the bar look has not been changed since the clarence hotel taken over by Manacle management, the wooden cabinets, shelves and bright yellow light at the bar definitely need to be changed with more dark colour with red lights touches to make the place look more kinky. The mirror music duke box near the DJ needs to be removed out of the room. I didn't see the old chains from the old Manacle. There is no character whatsoever about leather being in that new Manacle. Very empty, nothing on the ceiling. We were expected to see some welcome entertainments in there, such as sexy leather boys dancing with leather mask with skimpy leather short pants or something. The place definitely needs to spend extra dollars to make us want to come back. After spent some pennies for the cab from oxford st to get there, we want something different. We want to support you New Manacle, but please do something to make us come back to you.

Don't go wetting your pants just yet.

Opening nights of new venues are always packed. The true test is once you get to the 3rd or 4th weekend after opening night, then you know if you have a success or a flop.

I suggest we all sit back and show a bit of caution at this early stage. Patience is a virtue.

Re:
To be fair to the owners it was a soft launch weekend and they are literally still fixing the place up. You could see it was still a building site so I think its a little premature to start criticising it.

The front bar has not been touched (yet) at all so it has that daggy TAB bar sort of feel but with the pool tables is was busy all night up until when we left at 2am.

The back section (Manacle) has been painted black and the carpet has been ripped up. They are still yet to put the features in like the web chain plus I believe there are alterations to the bar to be done. The place was packed when we got there at 10pm but was thinning out by 1am so my guess is a lot of people just dropped by to check it out.

I think the place has great potential after they do a few more tweaks...

Guys, no offence, but just enjoy what you have for goodness sakes and support it! I live in Adelaide...believe me, all we have now is just the Mars Bar and that's it. The Hampshire recently told Blaze it no longer wants to be advertised as a venue or be a distribution point. http://blazenewz.com/news/local/another-venue-gone-hampshire-hotel/
So what now who knows here, the Adelaide gay scene is so fragmented these days; don't get me wrong, I personally have always supported venues, but others well I'll leave it up to you. Just enjoy yourself, and don't let the degredation of venues, and the gay scene in general spread.

M2M Gold Coast Parties
Our First Party will start of with a champagne reception, with BYO facilities to follow. As guests want to connect and play within a few hours there is a fantastically open and friendly atmosphere. We have also been sponsered by Gay Match Maker.

Everyone is happy to be there, looking great and wanting to attract and be attracted. Knowing everyone you meet shares your purpose and has been vetted, breathes a relaxed, special feel through the venue. With the champagne, the luxury surroundings and the gorgeous sexy people it creates a magical bubble of security and intimacy.

There is nothing more you have to do, other than enjoy yourself. We are looking to meet fun and friendly gay and bi sexual/curious men, who can get along with each other comfortably and effortlessly.

The venue is a luxurious fully-furnished apartment in the heart of Surfers Paradise. It is very centrally-located with three luxury bedrooms with intimate decor, floor to ceiling windows high above the skyline, pool table, spa, bar area (BYO), DJ spinning sexy sounds, and our own on site security.

The cover charge of booking a place at our party $80. Please note that you are not paying for sex, although the because of the environment it is likely to happen.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I respect everyone's opinion. However, with the greatest respect to Panther's comment on this wall on Tuesday 3 June at 8.29am I have to say that I disagree with him. I hope it is not "taboo" to have my reasons for disagreement published on this site.

And so in the spirit of this discussion I shall now in a muture adult like fashion supply my reasons constructively without being nasty or rude as to why I disagree with him and I would expect that my comments pass thru the checkgate.

The original comment that says "Your post doesn't cut any slack with me. Nobody forces you to live in Adelaide" makes a valid point , and in my opinion is not nasty. I would challenge Panther to place the well used tag "this is the opinion of the poster" under his own post because

(a) It is not stating a fact, it is expressing an opinion, and

(b) Panther's opinion doesn't represent my opinion regarding the comment in question on this occassion

To elaberate further,

People who come on here bemoaning about how inadequate the gay scene is in the city that they live have nobody but themselves to blame. People have CHOICES in life. You either choose to live in a city with a small gay scene or if that isn't to your liking you can choose to pack up and move elsewhere where the gay scene might be more to your liking. Nobody in a developed world country is forcing you to live anywhere. Thats why Sydney is the biggest gay scene in the country. A large number of young gay people who grow up in country regions and other capitals cities are drawn to it like a magnet. It's a well known saying around the traps that a young gay Aussie guy or girl's gay education isn't complete until they've lived in Sydney. So while Jamie's lamenting of the Adelaide scene is stating a sad situation the fact remains that he can CHOOSE to do something about it and consider moving to another city where a more vibrant gay scene might exist.

It is therefore my contention that the original posting was not nasty but mearly stating a fact albeit stated in a blunt manner.

And of course, The above post is my opinion.

Feel free to agree or disagree with me but respect that I am entitled to this opinion. Thank you.

Re:
My opinion on "Your post doesn't cut any slack with me. Nobody forces you to live in Adelaide"

It's a glib acidic comment, dismissive and unnecessary. No one knows the poster's circumstances. So they should just pull up stumps and move to Sydney as soon as the scene in Adelaide starts to deteriorate? Maybe they will do that....leave friends behind, sell the house, quit the job, move away from family...and maybe they won't.

Re:
While having a vibrant gay scene is important to a lot of people, I think today's culture is more about choosing to live in a city which fulfills more criteria than just "a good gay scene". Adelaide is a beautiful, well designed, clean city. There are lots of reasons that someone would choose to live in Adelaide over Sydney. The fact that the gay scene isn't as vibrant as it could be is a negative (for some), but it's not something that everyone should necessarily decide their abode on.

But yes, I do agree - no one is forcing anyone to live anywhere. Jamie was commenting on what he (or she) thought of the scene in Adelaide. It shouldn't therefore be suggested that because of this complaint, that Adelaide is no longer a viable city to live in (which is definitely the impression that I, and no doubt other people got from your reply).

Moving sublime to Arq would be appropriate as the straight community see Arq as merely a gay-friendly straight venue.
